Edinburgh's Telford College is committed to ensuring that everyone is treated with respect and dignity treating everyone equally regardless of age, disability, ethnic origin, gender, political or marital status, race religion or sexual orientation.
Promoting an environment free from discrimination which aims to ensure that our Equality of Opportunity Policy is upheld. The Policy compiled by the College applies to all College staff, students, customers and visitors. Partner organisations and subcontractors are required to have Equality of Opportunity Policies consistent with the Policy. The College's Equality of Opportunity Policy also incorporates a Disability Policy and the Race Equality Policy.
Community
Edinburgh's Telford College understands the need to involve itself in the community to which it serves. We work hard at establishing and maintaining local links within the wider Edinburgh area.
Lothian Employers' Network on Disability
The College is also a member of the Lothian Employers' Network on Disability (LEND). This is a network set up by an organisation called 'Intowork' which co-ordinates information events for Lothian employers, with the primary aim of encouraging information sharing between employers on disability issues.
Disability Symbol
Disability issues are a focus of the College and we pride ourselves in being able to use the Disability Symbol. This is a recognition given by Jobcentre Plus to employers who have agreed to meet five commitments regarding the recruitment, employment, retention and career development of disabled people. Symbol users are seen as being 'Positive About Disabled People'.
The commitments relating to the use of the symbol are:
Commitment 1 - To interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities.
Commitment 2 - To ensure there is a mechanism in place to discuss, at any time, but at least once a year, with disabled employees what they can do to make sure they can develop and use their abilities.
Commitment 3 - To make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment.
Commitment 4 - To take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make your commitments work.
Commitment 5 - Each year, to review the five commitments and what has been achieved, to plan ways to improve on them and let employees and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans.
