Royal Hairdresser Returns to her Roots!
Edinburgh’s Telford College is delighted to welcome back Telford alumni and celebrity hairdresser, Denise McAdam RVM who will be visiting the College to meet with the College’s current hairdressing students on Monday 1 November 2010.
With roots that began in the hairdressing training salons at Edinburgh’s Telford College back in 1974, Denise McAdam’s career has taken her on a long and fascinating journey styling the locks of the world’s top models, photographers, royal families and celebrities including Bo Derek, Cindy Crawford and Kylie Minogue. However the highlight of her career came recently with the announcement that she would receive the Royal Victorian Medal from the Queen - an honour reserved for those who have made an outstanding contribution to the lives of the royal family.
Despite having worked with the royal family for over 30 years and having travelled the globe tending to the manes of the rich and famous, 52-year-old, Denise from Penicuik still credits the start of her successful career to the time she spent at Telford:
“I owe a lot of my success in my career from the initial start and support I got from Telford. I joined the hairdressing course in August 1974 and it was from my training and experience that I gained while studying at the College - and the strong reference I got from the Head of Hairdressing at the time, James Tait - that landed me my first job Edinburgh’s hairdressing institution, Greens on George Street.”
Denise will be meeting the students for an open discussion about her career and to offer advice to the students on how to make a successful career from hairdressing. She said:
“My advice to current Telford students is to keep going and don’t stop believing in yourself – the possibilities that arise from studying at College are limitless! Scottish hairdressers are considered the best in the business so having trained at Telford you will go far. I encourage students if you have dream, work hard to chase it - enter as many competitions as you can, set your mind at it and you will achieve it, just as I did, an ordinary girl from Penicuik!”
Telford’s Hairdressing Curriculum Manager, Jakki Jeffery said:
“We are really looking forward to meeting with Denise and hearing an account of her extensive, colourful career. I am sure she will be a great inspiration to our students to see what opportunities can arise from studying at college and instil in them the motivation to work hard to achieve a rewarding career in their field.”
