Course Overview

This course is designed to improve your English for work or further study in the UK. The course aims to develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for everyday life and in a work-context leading to the SQA Higher ESOL award. In addition to ESOL, you will improve your IT skills by completing the European Computer Driving License (ECDL). The course includes valuable careers guidance in preparation for work and a 12-day work placement. The work placement will give you practical experience in an industry and prepare you for employment. This course includes taught classes, directed self-study and personal tutorial time. These courses are challenging and require the ability to study independently.  

This course is bursary funded so you will not have to pay course fees and may be eligible for other bursary funding. You will be expected to buy the course materials as specified by your tutor (approximately £45).  


What You Will Learn

  • English language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing 
  • Study grammar and vocabulary at an advanced level 
  • Complete an SQA Business Management unit at Level 5 
  • Complete the European Computer Driving License Essentials 
  • You may also be able to study for Stage 2 of the ECDL (extra) careers guidance and skills for preparing for work 
  • Work Experience Unit Level 5 including a work placement 

Placement Information
  • You will have a 12-day work placement close to your chosen career field in order to gain essential and hands-on experience in your industry. 

Entry Requirements

  • You should have a level of English equivalent to IELTS 5.5, SQA National 5 grade B or above or Cambridge First Certificate at grade B or above 
  • You should identify clearly the reason for studying your chosen subject in your course application

  • IELTS 5.5 or equivalent
How the course is assessed
  • You will be assessed through SQA Higher assessments.

Information on Test/Auditions/Interview Requirements
  • You will be invited for a test and interview where your language level and suitability for the course will be checked
Progression And Articulation Routes
  • Progress to mainstream college courses at NC or HNC level
