This 12-week evening course is a great place to start for
people who are interested in working with children and young people. It's
designed for career changers taking the first step in finding out whether
this it the right choice for them to make.
The expansion in the early learning and childcare sector at
the moment means that there are a high number of employment opportunities
available. This course will offer an introduction to working in the sector
and help you decide if this is something you want to continue
The course will have taught sessions covering a range of
topics relevant to working with children and young people in a range of
different settings. The sessions will be interactive and informative with
discussions and group work. You'll be expected to take part and share your

There is not a placement requirement for the course. However
it's recommended that you get some work or volunteering experience in a setting
with children or young people as part of your preparation for working in
the early learning or childhood practice sector. This can help you
identify if it's the right career path for you and will also give you the
opportunity to link the course topics to work practice.
Some suggestions for volunteer opportunities might be –
local Scout or Guide groups, additional support needs play schemes, local
schools or nurseries, playgroups, youth clubs.

- There are no formal assessments, however, there will be a chance to submit a written assessment to get tutor feedback.

- Full-time or part-time childhood practice courses – the level will depend on your

- The early learning
and childcare sector is expanding and there are a currently a high number of
posts available in all local authority areas. This is predicted to continue in
the near future.

Karen is currently employed in a local authority
call centre. She responds to calls for the social work team. Through this post
she became interested in working with children and families and wanted to find
out more about a career in early learning. She enrolled on our recent ‘Get into
childcare’ course and enjoyed it so much that she has since
progressed on to a part time HNC Childhood practice course. She is doing a
placement in a local family centre and plans to apply for a post there next
