Course Overview

Upon successful completion you will be academically prepared and eligible to study on a range of Level 5/6 courses offered at Edinburgh College 

You will be eligible to applHuman Biology Higher is a part-time course designed to deepen your understanding of subjects such as Human Cells; Physiology and Health; Neurobiology and Communication. Biology is the study of living organisms and aims to find solutions for many of the world’s problems. These subjects will allow you to progress towards a career in the science and human biology industry or onto further study.  

Biology plays a crucial role in our everyday existence and due to advances in technologies this varied subject is now more exciting and relevant than ever. Our Science department offers you the opportunity to study in purpose-built laboratories. These will support the development of your general and specialist practical skills whilst enhancing your theoretical understanding of science. 

Higher qualifications, accredited by the SQA, are typically studied at high school and college. These qualifications act as pathways to further study including university entry. Edinburgh College offers a selection of subjects at a Higher and Advanced Higher level on a part-time basis. You may choose to study up to two subjects. These courses are challenging and require the ability to study independently. 

You will attend either day or evening-classes. Day-classes will be taught at Edinburgh College’s Sighthill campus twice a week for two-hours. Evening classes can be held at Edinburgh College or at an outreach location within the community once a week for three-hours. Applicants will be required to attend 6 additional evening sessions on a Thursday across the year to complete essential SQA course work. 

Course Fees: £268 (approx.) per subject. Fees will be confirmed when an application has been processed. y for NC Applied Science

  • Genes and Proteins in Health and Disease 
  • Human Genomics 
  • Metabolic Pathways 
  • Cellular Respiration 
  • Energy Systems in Muscle Cells 

Physiology and Health: 
  • The Structure and Function of Reproductive Organs and Gametes (and their role in fertilisation) 
  • Hormonal Control of Reproduction 
  • The Biology of Controlling Fertility 
  • Antenatal and Postnatal Screening 
  • The Structure and Function of Arteries Capillaries and Veins 
  • The Structure and Function of the Heart 
  • Pathology of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) 
  • Blood Glucose Levels and Obesity Linked to Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes 

Neurobiology and Communication: 
  • Divisions of the Nervous System and Parts of the Brain 
  • Perception and Memory as Storage Retention and Retrieval of Information 
  • The Cells of the Nervous System and Neurotransmitters at Synapses 
  • Communication and Social Behaviour 

Immunology and Public Health: 
  • Non-Specific Defences 
  • Specific Cellular Defences
  • The Transmission and Control of Infectious Diseases 
  • Active Immunisation and Vaccination 
  • The Evasion of Specific Immune Responses by Pathogens 
Entry Requirements

  • National 5 at A/B in Biology (or equivalent)  
  • National 5 at A/B in Mathematics (or equivalent) 
  • National 5 at A/B in English is recommended but not mandatory (or equivalent) 
  • Applicants should clearly identify the reason they chose to study Higher Human Biology in their course application?

  • IELTS 6.0
How the course is assessed

  • You must pass all the units to complete this course 
  • You must complete an assignment that will demonstrate the breadth of skills, knowledge and understanding learnt from the subjects taught during this course 
  • You must complete a question paper in exam conditions

Online applications for Advanced Higher/Higher/National 5 courses will open online on 6 August (SQA Exam Results Day). All applicants who meet the entry requirements following exam results will be guaranteed a place.
