So you want to work in the media industry but you’re not sure what it’s about, how to get there, what you’re good at or even what you might be good at? The snappily titled National Certificate in Media is the place to start. This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of video production in the three main areas of the industry – technical, production and creative.
You will learn to use video cameras, how to record sound, and how to light for video. You will be shown how to research, plan and produce programmes and learn how the media industry works. And you will gain practical hands on experience in scripting, directing and editing short form video.
The course also offers units in radio and photography to provide you with a wider range of skills that not only feed into the craft of video production but which will also allow you to explore other creative routes.
In addition to the practical work, there are several theoretical units. The media industries will be examined in depth putting the various jobs employers and economic factors from a contemporary perspective. You will be taught research and analysis skills to enable you to produce coherent written work. On successful completion of this qualification, we expect students to progress to an HND level course in Television or Radio with the eventual aim of acquiring a job in the industry.
