EU Settlement Scheme

EU, EEA and Swiss nationals resident in the UK before 31 December 2020

The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020.  Now, we are in the transition period.  This transition period finishes on 31 December 2020. During this transition period, EU, EEA and Swiss nationals, and eligible family members, can stay in the UK in the same way as before the UK left the EU.

If you want to stay in the UK after the transition period you must apply to the EU Settlement Scheme (settled / pre-settled status). The EU Settlement Scheme gives you the opportunity to protect your residence and status in the UK after the transition period finishes.

EU, EEA and Swiss nationals, and eligible family members, who started living in the UK before 31 December 2020, must apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK after 30 June 2021. The deadline for applications is 30 June 2021.

It is a good idea to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme as soon as possible before the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020, especially if you will be travelling abroad and returning to the UK after this date.

Note: you do not need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme if you have British or Irish citizenship (including 'dual citizenship').

You can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme on the gov.uk website. To apply and find out more detailed information about the documents you need to provide and if you meet the eligibility criteria, please go to:

The gov.uk website also has a translated guide in 26 other languages:

EU, EEA and Swiss nationals arriving in the UK after 31 December 2020

EU, EEA and Swiss nationals (excluding Irish nationals) who come to the UK after 1 January 2021 will need immigration permission to enter the UK. If you are coming to the UK after 1 January 2021 to study at Edinburgh College you will be considered a visa student and will need to get the relevant immigration permission to study in the UK. There will be restrictions on your ability to work while studying and you might not be able to continue living in the UK after your course ends unless you find another sponsor or switch to a different visa category.
